How to Get Closer to Jesus
For many Christians, the heart's deepest desire is to be close to Jesus — to know Him, walk with Him, and live a life that reflects His love and truth. Yet, in the busyness of life, we often feel distant or distracted. The good news is that Jesus invites us into relationship, not religion. He’s not far off or hard to reach; He is present, patient, and continually drawing us near.
Closeness to Jesus doesn’t come from striving harder or checking off a religious to-do list. It’s rooted in love, surrender, and intimacy. It’s nurtured through daily moments, honest prayers, and a heart that says, “Jesus, I want to know You more.” The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in this journey, and we also have a role in responding. Let’s explore both.
Three Things the Holy Spirit Does to Draw You Closer to Jesus
1. The Holy Spirit Reveals Jesus to You
Jesus said in John 16:14, “He will glorify Me, for He will take what is Mine and declare it to you.” One of the primary roles of the Holy Spirit is to reveal Jesus — His character, His voice, His heart. It’s through the Spirit that Scripture comes alive, that Jesus' words hit your soul personally, and that you begin to see Him not just as a historical figure but as a living Savior and Friend.
The more you invite the Spirit into your daily life, the more aware you become of Jesus' presence. He shifts your perspective and opens your eyes to the beauty of Christ. The Spirit makes knowing Jesus not just possible but deeply personal.
2. The Holy Spirit Produces Christlike Character in You
Galatians 5:22–23 tells us about the fruit of the Spirit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These aren’t just lovely traits; they reflect Jesus Himself. As the Spirit works in you, He forms Jesus’ character in your life. And the more you become like Jesus, the closer you feel to Him.
This isn’t about behaviour modification; it’s the transformation from the inside out. The Spirit gently convicts, teaches, and strengthens you to live like Jesus in tangible, practical ways. Over time, you find yourself responding differently — with grace instead of anger, with faith instead of fear — because Jesus is being formed in you.
3. The Holy Spirit Leads You Into a Deeper Relationship with the Father and the Son
Romans 8:15 says, “The Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by Him, we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’” The Spirit draws you into the very heart of God — into sonship and daughterhood. He removes the orphan mindset that says we must earn our way to God and replaces it with the truth that we are already loved, chosen, and welcome.
The Spirit leads you in prayer, helps you hear God’s voice, and creates real and lasting intimacy with Jesus. He doesn’t push you into rules; He pulls you into a relationship.
Three Things You Can Do to Get Closer to Jesus
1. Spend Time in the Word
The Bible isn’t just a book — it’s the living Word of God and one of the most straightforward ways to hear Jesus’ heart. If you want to know what Jesus is like, what He cares about, and what He’s saying, start with the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Watch how He treats people, what He prays for, and how He loves.
Reading Scripture isn’t about checking a box; it’s about meeting a Person. Approach it with a heart that says, “Jesus, show me who You are.” Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes and speak to your heart as you read. Even a few verses a day, consistently, can transform your walk with Jesus.
2. Create Space for Prayer and Stillness
In a noisy world, it’s easy to fill every moment with distraction. But a relationship requires presence. Prayer isn’t just talking at God; it’s sitting with Him, listening, pouring out your heart, and allowing Him to respond. It’s where your soul meets His presence.
Set aside time each day, even 10–15 minutes, to be still before Him. You can pray out loud, write in a journal, or sit quietly. Bring your joys, your worries, your questions. Don’t try to perform — just be real. The more honest and consistent you are, the more natural prayer becomes and the more connected you’ll feel to Jesus.
3. Obey What He’s Already Shown You
Sometimes, we pray, “Jesus, show me what to do,” while ignoring the things He’s already spoken. Obedience builds intimacy. John 14:23 says, “Anyone who loves Me will obey My teaching. My Father will love them, and We will come to them and make Our home with them.” That’s a powerful picture — Jesus making His home in your life.
Obeying doesn’t mean perfection. It means taking what you’ve learned from Scripture, prayer, or conviction and walking it out. If Jesus asks you to forgive, forgive. If He prompts you to speak life into someone, do it. With each step of obedience, your trust deepens, and your relationship grows.
Final Thoughts: It’s a Relationship, Not a Race
Getting closer to Jesus isn’t about earning His love; it’s about living in response to it. He’s already made the first move — on the cross, in the resurrection, and through the gift of the Holy Spirit. Now, He simply invites you to come near.
James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” It’s not a vague promise — it’s a beautiful truth. When you take a step toward Jesus, He meets you there. Whether you’re in a season of joy or struggle, clarity or confusion, He remains faithful, loving, and ready to walk with you.
So breathe. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just need a willing heart and a desire to know Him. Start where you are, lean on the Spirit, open your Bible, speak to Him, and take simple steps of obedience. Over time, you’ll look back and realize — you’ve grown closer to Jesus than you ever imagined.
And the best part? He’s just getting started.
Spot on. Relationship not religion. This message really resonates in my heart. Well said Craig!
